Begin your journey at Pillsbury Crossing near Manhattan, a historic low-water crossing once used by pioneers. Today, it’s a tranquil spot for birdwatching, fishing, hiking, or kayaking during normal stream flow. Surrounded by scenic views, it’s an ideal place to start your adventure. From there, travel about 20 minutes west to the Kanza Prairie Biological Station, an 8,600-acre preserve showcasing the rich biodiversity of the tallgrass prairie. Explore over 12 miles of hiking trails and marvel at more than 600 plant species thriving in this untouched natural landscape.

Continue west along I-70 to Brown Memorial Park near Abilene, a peaceful destination offering disc golf, nature trails, and a picturesque waterfall created by the remnants of a mill dam. It’s a perfect stop to enjoy some outdoor recreation. From there, head northwest for about 45 minutes to Rock City, where you’ll find over 200 massive spherical boulders scattered across the landscape. For just $5 per adult (kids are free), you can hike, climb, and picnic among these fascinating geological formations.

Next, drive southwest for another 45 minutes to Mushroom Rock State Park, where unique mushroom-shaped rock formations await. Explore this small but enchanting park before heading just 10 minutes south to Kanopolis Lake State Park. With over 30 miles of trails, it’s a haven for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and more. Enjoy camping for $10 per night or book a cabin, with rates ranging from $35 to $80 depending on the season and amenities. Start your journey at the Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan, where interactive exhibits explore the science, history, and culture of the Flint Hills ecoregion from prehistoric times to the present day. The center also provides a deeper appreciation for the unique beauty of this tallgrass prairie region.

From Manhattan, head 45 minutes west along I-70 to Old Abilene Town, a delightful stop with free admission that brings the Old West to life. Stroll the boardwalk, watch can-can dancers, and catch an exciting shootout performance. While there, you can also visit the nearby Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library & Museum, which honors the legacy of one of America’s most influential leaders. Continue your adventure another 30 minutes west along I-70 to the Rolling Hills Zoo. This zoo features animals such as giraffes and snow leopards, as well as a fascinating museum showcasing the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and the natural world. For an added treat, take a $5 tram ride to explore the zoo's expansive grounds.

Cap off your trip with a visit to the whimsical Garden of Eden in Lucas. Follow KS-232 off I-70 to this unique folk art attraction. Marvel at the biblical and political sculptures that make this site a one-of-a-kind artistic experience. From Lucas, extend your adventure by heading south to Wilson Lake for camping or cabins, or travel 30 minutes southwest to Russell, where you’ll find a range of comfortable hotels to end your journey.
