Start at Ted Ensley Gardens in Topeka, a sprawling 37.5-acre paradise featuring over 1,200 varieties of perennials, 300 varieties of annuals, and serene paved walking trails. Stroll through its water and rock gardens and admire the arboretum’s diverse collection of trees. This picturesque garden is a perfect place to begin your journey, taking in vibrant blooms and peaceful scenery.
Next, travel 25 minutes northeast to Perry State Park, where outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy. With 25 miles of horseback riding trails and 22 miles of biking trails (both open for hiking), this park offers diverse ways to explore its natural beauty. Visitors can also go boating, fishing, or camping. Campsites are available for $10 a night, while cozy cabins range from $35 to $80 depending on the season and amenities. Afterward, drive about an hour southeast to Ernie Miller Park & Nature Center in Olathe. Here, you’ll find a haven for learning about and appreciating nature, with educational exhibits and peaceful hiking trails. Be mindful of muddy paths after rain, and note that bikes and pets are not allowed on the trails.
From Ernie Miller Park, head 10 minutes south to Cedar Lake Park, where you can fish or enjoy the serene 2.8-mile trail that leads to beautiful waterfalls. Finally, end your adventure 35 minutes west at Wells Overlook Park, just south of Lawrence. Climb the two observation towers for sweeping views of the surrounding area, or explore the nearby nature trail. If you wish to extend your trip, Clinton Lake State Park, 15 minutes west, offers camping options. Alternatively, Lawrence, just five minutes north, provides plenty of comfortable hotels to wind down after a day of exploring.

Just five minutes west, continue your adventure at the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead, an educational gem showcasing agriculture and local history. Here, families can meet farm animals, explore gardens, walk the nature trail, and visit a full-scale one-room schoolhouse, as well as a Kanza Native American display that brings history to life.
Finish your day at the Overland Park Arboretum Botanical Garden, a breathtaking 300-acre sanctuary with over 1,700 plant species spread across themed gardens and natural landscapes.
